Our school supply list will look significantly different from what we're used to now that most schools and universities have declared that classes for the academic year 2020-2021 would be done online. Instead of using a blend of physical and virtual materials as we have in the past for blended learning, this new normal will need a total transition to digital resources.
Of course, the transition will not be flawless; adjusting to a completely online learning environment will take some time. With that in mind, here are five "online school supplies" to help you get the most out of your online learning experience.
1. Device
This is perhaps the most important item on this list because you wouldn't be able to access any of your class materials - much alone the rest of the resources in this post – without a device. A tablet is far less expensive than a laptop and can accomplish almost everything a laptop can do, with the exception of running specific apps. If you're studying data science, computer science, programming, or information technology, a tablet might not be the ideal option. A tablet, on the other hand, would perform just as well as a laptop for half the price.
2. Internet connection
Choosing the right internet package is similar to buying a house, there are several factors to consider. Before deciding on a plan, think about your budget and the number of people that will be using your WiFi. Some high-end plans allow you to upload high-definition videos or files.
3. Headset
A headset with a microphone is a must for anyone streaming classes for better audio communication.
Choose a brand with good audio and microphone quality. It is also better to have the mute feature and volume controls in your hand. Whether it is wireless or wired would depend on your preference. The wireless type typically has a higher voice transmission delay, plus pairing your device would consume time.
4. Microsoft 365 or Google Suite
If your school or university qualifies for Microsoft 365 or Google Suite, all you have to do is log in with your school's unique email address. If it isn't, there are a variety of actions you may take to access these packages.
5. A good desk (or table) and chair
Creating a perfect atmosphere for studying is about finding balance. This means choosing the right furniture that can both provide comfort and improve focus and productivity.
Go for a chair that has good back support without being overly hard or uncomfortable. A swivel chair is recommended if you move around more often while seated, but you must ensure that you are comfortable.
Find a table that allows you to rest your forearms on top or be able to type without any stress on your joints. Your feet must be flat on the floor with your knees at 90-degree angles.
